Roof Repair

How We Ensure Every Roof Repair Is Done the Right Way

When your roof needs repair, it’s not just about patching holes or replacing a few shingles. It’s about doing the work correctly, using methods that meet code, preserve manufacturer warranties, and stand the test of time.

At Lioness Roofing, we evaluate every potential repair using three key factors:

  1. Compatibility – Is the material suitable for today’s standards?

  2. Repairability – Can it actually be repaired without damage?

  3. Availability – Can it be sourced in adequate quantity?

This process ensures that every repair we perform can be warranted, documented, and indemnified through proper evidence and compliance.

Compatibility - Is the Material Matchable and Code-Compliant?

Before any work begins, we verify whether the existing roofing material is compatible with the products currently available on the market.

  • We identify the manufacturer, model, and specifications of your existing shingles.

  • If there’s any indication of a discontinued product, we take precise measurements and, if needed, send samples to a lab for analysis.

  • If the product is confirmed discontinued, we advise against mixing it with new materials — as doing so may violate manufacturer recommendations, void warranties, and conflict with building code.

Code Support:

Per the 2018 International Residential Code (IRC) Section R904.2:

“Roof assemblies shall be of materials that are compatible with each other per manufacturers’ installation recommendations and with the building or structure to which the materials are applied.”

Why this matters:
Compatibility protects your home’s integrity, helps prevent warranty loss, and ensures your roof system performs as designed.

Repairability - Can the Material Be Repaired Without Further Damage?

Once compatibility is established, we assess repairability - meaning whether the shingle can physically withstand a repair.

We test for:

  • Pliability and flexibility: Can shingles be lifted and resealed without cracking the fiberglass mat?

  • Seal separation: Can the adhesive bond be delaminated without material transfer or damage to the lower course?

  • Nail zone durability: Can a new fastener be driven without shingle fracture or loss of granules?

If the material fails these tests, we will not recommend a repair because it would not be warrantable or reliable.

This process follows industry guidelines similar to those published by the National Academy of Forensic Engineers (NAFE) in Repairability Assessment for Evaluating Asphalt-Composition Shingle Roof Repairs.

See Official NAFE Article

https://journal.nafe.org/ojs/index.php/nafe/article/view/94/835

That article illustrates conditions such as:

  • Transfer and accumulation of asphalt from overlying shingles (Figures 17–18)

  • Shingle tearing and adhesion bonding between courses (Figure 19)

  • Damage propagation across adjoining shingles when attempting localized repair (Figure 20)

These are exactly the kinds of technical factors Lioness Roofing evaluates before approving any repair.

Availability - Can the Material Be Sourced in Quantity?

Even when a shingle passes both compatibility and repairability, we still have to locate the matching material.

  • Some shingles are limited to specific regions or discontinued in certain colors.

  • We confirm availability and quantity before approving a repair to ensure full, consistent coverage.

  • If the material cannot be sourced or is prohibitively expensive to ship, we document this clearly for insurance consideration.

Insurance Indemnification Through Documentation

Lioness Roofing performs insurance indemnification by providing objective documentation rather than opinion.

We do not speculate or make subjective claims - we provide verifiable evidence through photographs, videos, measurements, and field testing that align with forensic engineering standards such as those cited by NAFE.

Our documentation allows insurance companies to make fair and accurate determinations while protecting homeowners from improper or unsupported denials.
